UPI reports the Reagan administration signaled a possible rise from 15 dollars per month for conscientious objectors volunteering in the California ecology corps. Conservation officials called the 15 dollar allowance arbitrary and not a large sum, noting a potential later increase. Assembly Speaker Moretti said the program sounds good but won’t attract workers at 15 dollars.
A 24 hour hunger strike at Santa Rita Rehabilitation Center ended at breakfast as about 450 of the 1,400 inmates returned to meals. The protest sought relief over food pay and living conditions with authorities noting the action began Wednesday and affected roughly one third of inmates.
Concerned Parents Association said it will seek a stay of the federal court order for full integration of San Francisco elementary schools by September. Judge Weigel ordered the Board of Education and the NAACP to submit full integration plans by June 10, citing the Supreme Court’s April 20 decisions supporting busing. Superintendent Shaheen put anticipated costs at about 2.5 million dollars.
