Armored cars surrounded the runway and machine gunners held rooftop positions while thousands of Lebanese leftists and Palestinian guerrillas protested with Palestinian flags and slogans. The march, allowed under a government compromise, aimed to stay peaceful away from Rogers planned stops including the U.S. Embassy. In Jordan, Rogers had met King Hussein prior to the Lebanon visit.
