President's Council of Economic Advisers head Paul W. McCracken warned in Los Angeles that Southern California must diversify beyond aerospace to avoid future unemployment. He cited March 1971 state jobless rate at 6 percent nationally and 7.4 percent in Southern California, with aerospace workers most affected. He urged spreading "eggs in more than one basket" and noted improving retail sales and optimism, while inflation slows and defense and space jobs decline.
