Secretary of State William P. Rogers met with the SEATO allies in London as two days of talks concluded. He sought a private up to date report on the Vietnam negotiations from Ambassador Bruce, but no new peace initiative was in the works. Rogers planned a multi country tour starting in Ankara and including four Arab states and Israel, while urging continued economic aid to Vietnam and defense support from SEATO and partners like Japan. He defended U.S. policy amid domestic antiwar demonstrations and reaffirmed that Nixon's doctrine does not signify U.S. abandonment of Asia or the Pacific.
