Fireman flips during Regatta of Champions accident at Beach Marine Stadium
The ninth annual Regatta of Champions at Beach Marine Stadium saw Rich Purvis from Sowland flip his gas powered Thrill Seeker in the first qualifying run and be thrown clear as his craft sank. About 5,000 to 6,000 spectators watched, with many muttering for drag races to liven the event. Chuck Stearns’ world record attempt on the single ski was canceled because no backup run could be completed under stadium rules. Ted Chesher won the fiat race. Jon Louis and Mark Van Meter finished tangled in the second. Various results followed from races around the course, with multiple powered boats and skiers clocking times.
