Antibusing proposal by Nixon fades in Congress
One month after Nixon sent antibusing measures to Congress they lie dormant with little action expected. The dispute remains heated as moderates struggle to find middle ground. House amendments seek to ban or restrict funds for busing and pause court orders, while Senate versions are milder. A House-Senate conference has yet to begin to resolve differences. House member Edith Green warns of longer extensions on education programs if no compromise emerges. The debate renews interest in a constitutional amendment to outlaw busing for desegregation.
