U S May Veto Israel Sanctions At United Nations
The United States warned it may veto a Security Council resolution condemning Israel for recent actions in the Middle East unless the council condemns all violence. Britain and France privately supported a broader Arab-backed measure calling on states not to aid or impede peaceful settlement efforts. Ambassador Seali insisted the council must condemn Arab terrorism and Israeli operations alike, urging even-handed action to advance peace.

Court sees no barrier to tough oil spill laws
The U S Supreme Court unanimously upheld Florida and similar state measures imposing strict liability on shipowners for oil spill damages. Justice Douglas wrote that federal admiralty law should not preempt state authority, noting Florida can pursue cleanup costs and damages beyond mere cleanup. The decision contrasts federal limits with state duties, allowing broader coastal protection.
