Skylab Moves Toward Pad for Eight Month Orbit Test
The Skylab Space Station begins final preps toward launch at Cape Kennedy as a 334 foot craft lifts from hangar on a mobile platform. About 80 observers including congressmen and NASA officials watch the roll out as Dr. Joseph Petioneer of Marshall Space Flight Center comments on years of work and hopes. The crewed mission, with Pete Conrad, Joseph Kerwin, and Paul Weitz, undergoes medical checks in Houston before a May 1 departure aboard a Saturn IB rocket. A second crew launches August 8 for 56 days, with a final crew planned for November 9, totaling a long duration orbital test ending January 4.
