Long Beach to name new bridge after Robert R. Shoemaker
The Board of Harbor Commissioners unanimously decided the new Oth St span over the flood control channel will be named the Robert R. Shoemaker Bridge in honor of the late harbor engineer. A letter from the Long Beach chapter American Association of Engineers urged naming the Ocean Blvd bridge after Shoemaker, who died Jan. 25, but officials cited potential acceptance issues for the Ocean Bridge name. The 5th St crossing replaces no previous crossing at that location.
