California crime code overhaul clears 19th century provisions
Sacramento AP Senate committee approves a revision of the criminal code, removing outdated rules and tightening mandatory sentences. The measure would overhaul the Penal Code for the first time in 105 years, eliminate certain antiquated misdemeanors, and replace patchwork sentencing with a two-pronged mandatory prison approach for certain felonies and repeat offenses. Debate includes objections from the state public defender over justifiable homicide for police and a call to limit officer shooting to save lives.
