Sub contacts with Red subs off Formosa and fleet strength
Admiral Beakley reported U S ships have a few contacts with communist submarines off Formosa, not frequent and non-hostile. He cited Russian submarine strength rising from 460 to about 500 with 100 based in Vladivostok and the Pacific, plus 60 or 70 long range subs in the Far East. China received 15 Soviet subs and has under 100 smaller destroyer escorts and about 1,500 motorized junks.
