Navy targets 200 million for Long Beach shipyard work

Two Huntington Beach Boys Rescued From Storm Drain

Police and fire crews pulled two boys from a Huntington Beach storm drain after a 21 hour ordeal. Fire Capt. Gene Saunders crawled over 100 feet to reach Joseph Dupree and Jerry Marlow, who were unconscious but regained consciousness at Huntington Intercommunity Hospital. Each boy, ages 11 and 10, recovered from shock and exposure and asked about his buddy once conscious. The boys entered the drain sometime before 3:45 p.m. and were rescued the next day as authorities investigated the incident.

Acid Fumes Force Block Evacuation At United Chemical

A cloud of hydrochloric acid fumes forced an hourlong evacuation of an industrial block after 600 gallons spilled from a faulty valve at United Chemical Co. 1455 W leth St. Some chemical reached storm drains. fire crews used 2000 gallons of water to dilute it and shut valves to the drains. Battalion Chief John Holker described the scene as one hell of a cloud as five fire units responded.

A former FBI supervisor, John J. Duartey, was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of secret mail and wire tapping connected to an investigation by the Justice Department. Duartey, 35, led the New York FBI office in the era, and his actions relate to fugitive pursuits during his tenure.
