Senate inquiry eyes mandatory vehicle safety standards
Senate Commerce Committee leader Magnuson predicted the panel will push for mandatory motor vehicle safety standards after hearings on Johnson administration highway safety legislation. He said interim standards, collapsible steering wheels, dual brakes and other industry moves could be adopted pending further testing. The debate touched on antitrust immunity for sharing safety data and possible voluntary industry cooperation versus federal mandates.
