Unannounced nursing home inspections find widespread deficiencies
Federal health inspectors found major gaps in care at 295 nursing homes across 48 states through unannounced visits from August to November. Findings show 64 percent had fire safety violations, 44.8 percent of patients were given tranquilizers, 15.8 percent lacked dental care, and 74 percent lacked bladder and bowel training. The interim HEW report covers 3,458 patients, 75 percent female, median age 82, with further analyses due in May.

Florida doctors set strike to protest malpractice costs
About 150 Dade County physicians voted to strike April 15 unless the legislature acts to ease soaring malpractice insurance, which has doubled since January and may rise 30 percent by mid April. They will travel to Tallahassee on April 9 to demonstrate in front of the state capitol, with emergency care only after April 15. Critics say the move risks harming the elderly, while lawmakers work on a relief package.
