German Efforts to Straighten the Western Line Face Allied Resistance

With the French Army in France in June the German push concentrates on the southern end of the bulge near Troesnes and Moulin-Sous-Touyent while northern efforts near Soissons stall. Allied lines hold along the forest of Villers-Cotterets as German assaults fail. Bombardment of La Ferte ilon continues without breaking the barrier of resistance amid heavy losses. The Germans aim to envelop or force a retreat of allied troops in the bulge.

Prohibition Legislation Seems Unlikely in Congress

Washington reports indicate further prohibition bills appear unlikely as Senator Sheppard says President Wilson and Food Administrator Hoover oppose extending prohibition to beer and wine. With warehouses holding about 100 million gallons of whiskey, officials deem abolishing beer and wine production undesirable. Senate may strike an amendment to an emergency agricultural bill rather than pursue broader prohibition. Additionally, a plan to dispose of whiskey in storage is being considered.
