Telegraphers threaten general strike over Western Union

Washington June 4 Only federal intervention can avert a broad walkout by operators of Western Union and Postal Telegraph companies. J Konenkamp president of the Telegraphers Union said he would mail the call for a strike after Western Union refused to submit to the National Labor Board. He doubted government action could come in time to prevent a walkout.

Cabinet and Labor Union Talks Face Uncertain Strike Risk

Secretary Wilson described a cabinet discussion on the labor dispute with the union leadership. Although no plan for immediate action was indicated, the matter was to be reviewed by the cabinet today. Mr Konenkamp said President Gompers assured him of interest, sympathy, and possible AFL assistance. no statement was issued by Gompers.

Survivors Reach Atlantic Ports After U Boat Attack

New York dispatch reports several ships arriving at Atlantic ports with survivors of the coastwise steamer Carolina sunk by a German U boat. Eva B Douglass brings about 300 people, another British steamer 18 passengers and one seaman, totaling 319 saved of 200 passengers aboard. Other vessels include City of Columbus with 117 aboard, Grecian with missing crew from Jacob M Haskell, Gov Cobb with 200 apprentices, Dorchester with 1200 aboard, and Huron from a southern port bringing additional survivors.

Americans Stop German Advance Over the Marne

American troops with French forces west of Chateau-Thierry halted German assaults near the Marne. They entered battle soon after arriving, repulsed attacks, and took prisoners as Germans suffered losses. Bridge explosions and disciplined defense helped French troops cross safely. Paris noted a slackening of German efforts later the same day.

Unaccounted Vessels and Hathaway Crew Amid Raider Activity

The harbor scene reveals several vessels unaccounted for besides the Carolina. Only the crew of the schooner Samuel W. Hathaway of Boston remains unknown in number. Despite a raider’s 10 days in American waters, its military impact appears limited as no transport or war-supply ship bound for Europe has been sunk. American losses total just over 20,000 tons gross, all coastwise ships, including seven sailing vessels.

Cotton crop condition improves toward record prospects

Washington reports the cotton crop on May 25 stood at 82.3 percent of normal, better than any May 25 reading in the last decade except 1911. Officials expect area planted to increase, with a July update for acreage and an outlook near record proportions.
