Tillman calmly faces death as governor refuses mercy

Arthur Tillman, condemned for the Amanda Stevens murder near Delaware in 1913, heard the governor would not commute. He spent Sunday alone in a hospital ward at the penitentiary while reporters and visitors were barred. Big Fish Story Stirs Little Rock Crowds

Roy Smith, once clerk for the Arkansas B Commission and now a Camden land agent, arrived in Little Rock on Sunday and boosted his daily Ouachita County catch tale. The fish tale caused a panic and prompted several local fishing parties to plan visits to Camden later in the week.

Herd of Fifty Elk for Arkansas to Boost State Game Reserve

Federal game inspector V. Visart reports the US Department of Agriculture will grant a herd of fifty elk to Arkansas after the legislature passes protective laws. Arkansas lacks such laws, leaving it one of two states without game protection. Visart surveys potential sites, possibly near Jonesboro, for a reserve.

Highway contract to be let at Lonoke

Little Rock June 1 It is announced by the State Department of Highways that a contract will be awarded June 20 at Lonoke for eleven miles of highway from Scotts Station East toward Lonoke. The link will connect with the Alexander turnpike and close the Lime Rock Lonoke gap of forty miles. The work will be done by the county and by the district at an estimated cost of about 46000 dollars.

Prescott Citizens Cut Telephone Use Over Rate Increase

Prescott Arkansas residents join Business League protests halting about two hundred telephones across business and home lines. A petition urged major patrons to discontinue service, threatening a new local system if negotiations fail.

Alum baking powders declared now harmful

Washington May 1 Alum baking powders are no more harmful to a person than any other baking powders. Such is the conclusion announced today by the referee board of consulting scientific experts of the department of agriculture after three sets of extensive experiments on human subjects. The board’s report was unanimous and signed by Ira Remsen and others from Johns Hopkins Yale Northwestern Penn Harvard.
