Death by self inflicted pistol shot shocks Newport

William T. Dunn, manager of the Southern Cotton Oil Co plant in Little Rock, killed himself at Capt. J. H. McHugh’s Newport home this morning. The bullet passed through his head. Dunn, a frequent visitor to Newport, left no note. He was to wed Miss Dove Erwin next Wednesday. wedding invitations were issued. The motive remains a mystery to friends.

Nashville Ark January 10 The Democratic Central Committee of Howard County fixed March 25 as the country primary date and restricted voting to known Democrats who will support the nominees.

Taft Named as Possible GOP Nominee on First Ballot

President Roosevelt reportedly told a caller that William H. Taft would be the Republican nominee at the next convention on the first ballot and would secure about 600 votes. The remark ties Taft strongly to the party’s immediate presidential prospects.

Burglars Blow Safe in Emmet Store

A January night burglary in Emmet Arkansas used soap, crow bar, pick and nitro glycerine to blow open W C Allen store safe at 2 am. Nearly nothing was taken except a few cigars from a front case. Two strangers seen in town Thursday evening suspected as the culprits. one bought cheese and crackers then fled toward the depot.

Retrenchment at Iron Mountain Railroad Meeting

A special meeting of Iron Mountain Railroad Company superintendents was held at the General Superintendent’s office with Vice President Charles Smith Clarke and Purchasing Agent 8 L Puyor present. Plans for further operating expense reductions were discussed as traffic is expected to fall nationwide in the next thirty days and arrangements to discontinue some trains were considered.

Senator Jeff Davis of Arkansas returned to Washington and announced plans to introduce a bucket shop bill in the Senate on Monday. The measure targets stock gambling and futures dealing in cotton and other products.
