White Sands Desert Missile Range Birth of a Test Site
A 4000 square mile stretch near Jornada del Muerto in New Mexico became the White Sands Missile Range. Lt Col Harold Turner and German scientist Wernher von Braun oversaw the early tests including the first V2 static firing in 1945. Turner recalls improvised construction, concrete blockhouse work, and dramatic flame and debris during early trials.
