Two bombings struck American targets in Havana early today amid protests over mediation efforts. The National Cash Register Co. agency was damaged and a nearby windowed scene caused minor injuries. a nearby American grocery also suffered an explosion about an hour later. Authorities suspect a malefaction tied to Cuba's mediation dispute.
Springfield reports the Illinois Senate approved a bill to require wives to pay alimony as well as former husbands. Mrs Lottie Holman O Neill urged the measure saying men should have the same break women now receive.
Temperatures in Portsmouth climbed to near 98 before a freak storm hit New Boston Thursday night dropping the mercury by about 20 degrees. The storm moved to Greenup Kentucky causing lightning and rain damage. By Friday morning the area cooled to 71 with a 91 degree noon reading and a breezy relief from heat.

Dayton June 30 Colonel Vernon Roberts 53 chief surgeon of the National Military Home was shot and killed by James D. Shadbolt 55 a former resident who confessed after police said he killed Roberts over a grievance. Roberts wife narrowly escaped as four shots were fired. Shadbolt formerly lived at the home and said he planned to kill Congressman Byron H. Harlan for voting to remove him from pension rolls. He was found in the home cemetery within 90 minutes and confessed 30 minutes later. He had four weapons and hailed a taxi to the home, then fired as Roberts appeared at the door. Authorities cited prior plot rumors and guard adjustments after recent home discharges.
In Minneapolis during a heat wave, district court clerk George Hemperly reports a sharp drop in marriages. He normally issues 2 to 30 licenses daily in June, but the rate has fallen to less than half over the past three weeks of hot weather.

Washington reports more than 400000 veterans face loss of government payments as disability aid is trimmed under the economy laws. About 378000 World War I veterans with non service connected disabilities will drop from rolls tonight for an estimated 85 million dollars in savings. Special reviewing boards will evaluate cases by July 10 with remaining on rolls until October 31 or a board decision at 75 percent of prior payments.
Judge Horace L. Small seeks a second trial in common pleas court after his Wednesday conviction for intoxication. The motion, filed by Chester P.
