Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre defied Pope Paul VI by ordaining 14 priests and consecrating 16 subdeacons at Ecône near the seminary he founded. About 4,000 sympathizers witnessed the three hour rite as Lefebvre rejected rupture and urged defense of traditional liturgy amid church reform clashes. Two American ordinands were named, Anthony Cekada of Milwaukee and Terrence Finnegan of Rapid City.

USS Chemicals will add 195 million pounds of annual phenol capacity at Haverhill Ohio, raising total phenol to 520 million pounds yearly. Lorentz Promoted In Mideast Studies
Dr. John H. Lorentz, a Portsmouth raised linguist, is promoted to associate professor with indefinite tenure at Portland State University where he teaches Persian language and Middle East studies. He will be acting assistant director of the Middle East Studies Center this spring and helped expand the program at PSU since 1971. An exhibit from the Smithsonian, “Locks from Iran,” will be shown in Portland under MESC auspices Sept. 10 to Oct. 16.

Portsmouth City Council enacted 15 ordinances and many resolutions in a long meeting Tuesday night. It approved paying 17954 to Clayton Johnson for legal services to the Mayor's Downtown Improvement Committee covering May 28, 1974 to Feb. 22, 1977, rejecting prior 1500 payments. It also authorized 20000 notes in anticipation of bonds to fund sidewalk costs and renewed a note. Additional ordinances directed the City Manager to call for public works for cemetery and other projects.
