Eight Hurt In Portsmith Area Car Mishaps
Eight persons sustained injuries in two traffic crashes around Portsmith over the weekend. A 16 year old, Harold Herron of Franklin Furnace, riding a fender, was thrown from a car on Poplay Fork Rd. He was taken to Mercy Hospital in Hastings in fair condition with head and arm lacerations after being run over by the vehicle driven by Thomas Whitaker of Franklin Furnace Rt. 1. Whitaker was cited for permitting a person to ride outside the designated seat. The second crash on Route 52 near the Scioto-Adams line injured Mrs. Katherine Lee and Betty Ann Steith, both of Memphis, Tenn., riding with Gordon Teegarden of Cincinnati. Teegarden attempted to pass as Gillum, of Buena Vista, turned left. Teegarden suffered body bruises and Mrs. Teegarden facial injuries. A third minor injury was reported in a two-car crash at 8 a.m. Saturday near Wheelersburg. Page 2.

Four Released In Stabbing Near Lyra
A 69 year old farmer, George H. Cook of Wheelersburg, remained in Mercy Hospital after being stabbed twice during a Sunday scuffle while attempting to oust turtle hunters from his property near Lyra. Four Lawrence County men, who admit turtle hunting but deny the attack, were arrested for investigation and released today at noon. One suspect, William Layne, initially identified by Cook, could not identify the others this morning.
