Portsmouth OKs 17 Percent Gas Rate Hike
Portsmouth City Council approved a 17 percent rate increase for Ohio Valley Gas Co effective after July 26. The base first 1 000 cubic feet rises from 1.69 to 2.25 dollars, plus 1 dollar for the second 1 000 feet and 78 cents per thousand for the next 8 000 feet. Melvin Mershon cited higher labor and production costs. The four year ordinance keeps rates flat for two years with gradual increases later. The average consumer will pay about 2.24 dollars more monthly. A public hearing on the 1970 budget is set for July 10 in City Hall.
