Winter W. Scott, 66, of 1905 Summit St, died of a heart attack in a funeral car shortly after attending the burial of his daughter Mrs Helen Sanford in Memorial Burial Park. The car was returning from the cemetery near Wheelersburg when he collapsed beside his wife. The party included Mr Sanford and other mourners.
Wyatt Cooper of New Boston pleaded guilty to second degree murder in Common Pleas Court after the first degree trial was aborted. He received a life sentence in Okis Penitentiary. Prosecutor Kelly cited new evidence influencing the plea.
United States officials doubt Malik the Soviet proposal for a Korea ceasefire is in good faith. Ridgway demands an ironclad agreement while Britain may seek Red China views through Peiping. UN Assembly President Nasrallah Entézam gave no session indication on Korea issue.
Gen. Matthew Ridgway said he did not know what was happening with cease fire proposals and that things look better than before during a flying visit to South Korea’s President Syngman Rhee. Secretary of State Acheson told the House Foreign Affairs Committee that a withdrawal of Communist forces behind the 38th parallel could be a successful end to the Korean conflict if it guarantees no resumption of aggression. He defended the $8.5 billion foreign aid plan and stressed stopping Soviet encroachment, while outlining two purposes in Korea: repel aggression and pursue eventual unification. He warned Moscow seeks to isolate the United States and emphasized strengthening allies as key to American security.
Britain's Foreign Secretary Herbert Morrison announced in the House of Commons that all tankers owned by Angloe Iranian Oil Co have been ordered to leave Abadan immediately. Ten tankers loaded with oil were refused clearance by Iranian authorities after captains refused to sign receipts for payments due. Morrison warned the move could shut Abadan refinery, the world's largest, if departures proceed. The site nation is described as very serious and storage would last about a week.
