Washington June 26 AP The House considers a bill trimming excise taxes by 1 010 600 060 to be passed by Thursday The plan offers a long Fourth of July recess as bait and then to suspend controversial business for 10 days to allow lawmakers to campaign in their districts The move would be the fourth departure from Washington for political spadework without missing a roll call
Flash floods devastate six counties in north central West Virginia with towns like Bailey and Smithburg hit hard. At least 12 of the 21 dead are from the Bailey family, and several others remain missing as authorities fear the toll may rise. Congress debates a large foreign aid package and extensions of draft law amid holiday plans.
The Norfolk and Western Railway planned an afternoon ceremony to open the Powhatan Arrow through the Elk horn Tunnel as the first through train on the new double track. The 11 mile Lick Branch to Cooper relocation cuts grades and curves to boost speed and efficiency on the Norfolk to Cincinnati line, with ongoing electrification projects noted.
A community along the Hughes River south of here suffered extreme flooding with six deaths including a grandmother and two grandchildren. West Union saw 200 homes destroyed while Weston reported two million dollars in damage as floodwaters covered most areas except the hillsides. Dr. Harry A. Schirrman 71 resigns as U S weather observer for Portsmouth after 47 years. He will complete work Friday and turn over records and equipment to his successor when officially notified. A bureau representative will select a replacement, with Leland Pierce moving from Billings to assume duties.
New York June 26 Frank Erickson kingpin of a nationwide bookmaking business was sentenced to two years in prison and a 30000 fine. A three judge panel gave him one year for conspiracy and two years for 59 counts of bookmaking to run consecutively. He could be out after about 20 months with good behavior. The court also imposed a suspended three year term. The district attorney sought five years and 39000 in fines. Erickson pleaded guilty to a 60 count gambling charge.
Fortsmouth leader E E McFarland received unanimous endorsement Sunday for first vice commander of the Ohio American Legion Department at the district meeting in Circleville. Kent W Castor was elected commander. Mark Lilly named vice commander. Delegates to the national convention include Dudley Whipple and Boyd Aikman. The state convention is set for Cleveland in August. A separate note reports Judge Reeves denying a new trial for Judith Coplon in a Russian spy case.
A Sunday lightning strike stunned 69 year old I Maude Smith of 6201 Second Street and damaged three buildings and three vehicles. The Gemperline Furniture Co at 632 Second Street and other nearby properties suffered loss likely over 2500 dollars. Fire Chief Krebler and firefighters barricaded the block at 612 Second Street to guard against falling brick and stone.
Tokyo dispatch reports U S rushed war materiel aid to Communist invaded Korea including 10 F 51 Mustang fighters. MacArthur HQ says transfer approved but date not fixed. Evacuation of about 700 Americans and shipment convoys will be escorted by naval and air cover from Japan to Korea.
President Truman vows full U S support of United Nations actions to end the aggression against Korea. He lauds the Security Council for ordering withdrawal of invading forces and warns that such lawless acts will not be tolerated. The UN council called for a cease fire and a pullback from Southern Seoul by the Communist forces in a 9 to 0 vote.
North Korean forces pierced the South’s line and reached Seoul outskirts, broadcasting a surrender demand over Pyongyang Radio. Gen Chai Ung Jun led the invasion as Southern defenses faced near-total defeat amid a bold northward advance.
Seoul leader Syngman Rhee blamed American aid as too little and too late for South Korea’s crisis. He and his cabinet met overnight amid pressure from Northern forces while still resisting surrender. Some suggested moving the capital more than 200 miles south to Pusan as capitulation seemed a possible alternative.
