Bitter Debate On Abortion Develops At AMA Session

At the AMA annual convention in Chicago a sharp debate over abortion policy emerged. Proponents argued abortion is a woman’s fundamental right and that current limits will be struck down by the Supreme Court, while opponents warned of echoes of Nazi population control. The AMA Board backs changing policy to let a woman and her doctor decide, with House of Delegates vote expected by week’s end.

Supreme Court bans property tax voting limits on bonds

The Supreme Court ruled 5 to 3 that voting in general obligation bond elections cannot be restricted to property owners. The decision aligns with prior rulings against property-based voting bans in school and revenue bond elections. The Phoenix case involved a resident denied a bond vote for not owning real property. The ruling affirmed a three‑judge panel and said nonproperty owners must be allowed to vote, but it will not be retroactive.
