Deputy County Engineer Harlan Danner presents a drawing of the Scioto County Airport showing a 4,200 foot paved runway 100 feet wide extending north to south. Forty foot wide paved taxiways connect to each end and the center for takeoffs landings as bids were opened for the project.
The Ohio General Assembly neared adjournment with 169 lawmakers divided on a plan for a state school board and a subsidy distribution bill. Conferees worked toward agreement on the biennial 948 million dollar state appropriations and several tax and bond proposals, including a 150 million dollar mental and correctional project funded by a cigarette tax.
Williams Mfg Co announces a plantwide wage increase averaging 2.42 percent effective with July 11 pay. The raise will appear in July 29 checks as part of a year with higher hours, bonuses, and overtime. Plant will close for annual vacation next week.
President Juan Peron announced he will remain in office only to serve the people and began shaping a new cabinet. He cited the loyal mass resignation following last week’s revolt and faulted marine and naval aviation officers, while hinting a military-leaning lineup and possible reappointments.
President Eisenhower on a six day tour of Vermont New Hampshire and Maine teased a possible second term during an outdoor session in Concord New Hampshire. He joked about White House residence and joked about Adams finishing lectures with a responsive crowd of about 15 000 at State House Plaza.
John R. Jurgensen Co. of near Cincinnati submitted the lowest bid for clearing grading draining and paving the 4200 foot runway taxiways and parking apron for the Scioto County Airport. Six bids were opened by county commissioners with figures ranging to $505,164. The lowest three bids will go to the Civil Aeronautics Administration for review while electrical work remains to be let.
Selby family reports the 79th year of its shoe firm underway with strong six month profits totaling 159,985 and optimistic outlook for 1956. Homer C. Selby reelected chairman and president, Roger Selby named senior vice president, Mark W. Selby reelected director, and a five member board installed.
The CIO United Steelworkers rejected U.S. Steel’s 10 cent per hour wage proposal, with no talks scheduled but behind the scenes discussions possible. USW president David J. McDonald called the offer insufficient in the industry’s most profitable year. The union, seeking larger raises, could strike at midnight next Thursday if no agreement is reached.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles urged an end to the cold war by halting force and subversion. Speaking at the U N's 10th anniversary session, he defended NATO, reviewed past conflicts, and outlined five key problems for the Geneva summit including German unification and disarmament.
A Public Health Service statement aligning with a medical panel endorses continuing manufacture and use of the Salk polio vaccine. At a House Commerce Committee hearing, 15 experts urged safer, less virulent virus strains and reported strong support for ongoing inoculations with no dissent on the vaccine’s core value.
