Present Site For Hospital Gets Approval
Recommendations for a long range improvement program for Portsmouth General Hospital are expected to be filed with City Council in July. Dr. Herman K. Smith of Chicago, who appraised the hospital, is compiling this report. He may advise keeping the hospital on its present site with rear additions and eventual exterior expansion into the city parking area behind the hospital. He notes a modern X shaped design, air conditioning, and windowless wings. Foundations could support a six story building and future growth would reduce traffic noise on Chillicothe Street. Norfolk & Western rail noise and smoke might be cut if diesel locomotives are adopted.

The Highland School on Hutchins between Grant and Logan Street sold at public auction Friday afternoon to C. W. Baker & Son of 1721 Jackson Street for 2100. The 1907 building cost about 45000 and will be razed next week. Wesley P. Ridenour of the Portsmouth city school board acting as auctioneer noted the bid was higher than expected. Baker and son, Harald, outbid Stanley Evans of Evans Wrecking Co. at 900 and continued with bids through 20 rounds before topping the price.

South Shore Man Killed By Auto While In Army
A former South Shore resident 23 year old Ralph Edward Howland serving at an Army base in Georgia was killed in a traffic accident Friday night. Relatives were notified with few details. Born in Greenup County he was the son of Louis and Louise Fannin Howland. He leaves a wife and son Larry in Tennessee, a half brother Paul L. Quillen of South Shore, and a half sister Mrs Clyde Boucher of South Shore. The body will be returned to Roberson Funeral Home.
