WPA officials set the new fiscal year starting July 1 with nearly $4 billion in approved projects. A WPA report shows 90,000 projects underway as of April 15 out of 178,000 total, with an estimated cost of $5.45 billion. Direct labor costs account for about 86 percent of WPA expenditures.
Washington report states an upcoming WPA order will end the pre November first dole recipient requirement for job eligibility. The change broadens access to federal work programs and affects applicants nationwide this week.
The WPA program funds show Ohio 18 percent and $101.7 million. Kentucky contributions reach 30.7 percent at $22.8 million while Indiana and Pennsylvania report sizable shares. Local projects include flood defense and road work with total expenditures over 1.14 billion across states. Local officials discuss decentralizing WPA administration and setting hourly wages locally.
George Rogers, 3, of Lowsy, injured critically Sunday when he fell about 10 feet from a dam at Turkey Creek in Camp Dye. He suffered a skull fracture and was taken by relatives to Dr. D. N. Hopkins’s office. he was later removed to a general hospital. Rogers, employed on the scout camp project, was standing on the dam when he fell headfirst onto the concrete base.
A. V. Adams of this city was elevated to state commander of the Disabled American Veterans of the World War at the annual convention in Zanesville. He was chosen senior vice commander in 1935 and presided at the Zanesville sessions. Columbus will host the 1937 convention, and two constitutional changes were rejected.
Two persons sustained injuries in separate Portsmouth road accidents Sunday. Elinor Covert 16 of Sciotoville and Thelma Woodruff of Vinton were bruised in crashes on Eighth street and Campbell avenue. Willard Woodruff 24 was accused of drunken driving after backing into A Dawson’s car, and Vernon Ball 34 of Sixth street was involved in a collision with Woodruff. Patrols arrested John Holloway 38 for drunken driving after a Jackson street incident and Tom Norman 22 on Third street for reckless driving. Ellis Sparks 19 was jailed for drunken driving in the East End.
Portsmouth works saw two waves of workers changing places as groups entered and exited the plant for vacations. A Wheeling contingent of about twenty escorted by New Boston police entered at noon Sunday, followed by about 25 more later today.
Italy and Britain move toward a four point military pact in the Mediterranean while Italy and Germany agree on a commercial treaty. Mus solini warns that he can restrain nations "crazy with the heat" as talks focus on naval air supremacy and troop limits in Egypt Lib ya and Cyprus.
Four persons died in Ohio over the weekend in traffic crashes. An auto at high speed hit a tree near Washington D. C. H. killing Robert Bailey and Kenneth Warner, both 25 to 27 and colored from Columbus. Ernest Myers 1 drowned in Big Darby Creek. William Thoman 42 drowned when his car plunged into the Maumee River at Toledo. Hector Britton 40 of Harbor View drowned after falling from a boat near Turtle Island. A man’s body found in the Licking River near Newark. Harry Pucket 40 injured fatally in an automobile crash.
Okey Odell labor leader was recaptured at Chillicothe and brought to the Toledo workhouse by superintendent William Hirsch. Odell had escaped on December 24 and had been active in the 1934 onion field strike near McGuffey after a Kenton fine and 90 day sentence for pointing a firearm.
Elisha Blevins, 32, of Upper Twin Creek, is in serious condition with knife wounds to the lung neck and face after a Saturday afternoon attack. David Blevins, his brother, is jailed for investigation of the stabbing as deputies describe a family quarrel ending in violence at the family home.
Two unemployed men who witnessed a $400 robbery of a former soldier were found beaten to death in a riverfront building. Detectives found William Maddigan, 48, in a first floor room with a crushed skull and William Hoelscher, 60, on a pallet on the second floor.
Chinese bandits hold Rev. Fr. Clarence Joseph Burns of the Maryknoll mission and demand 5,000,000 Chinese dollars or $1,500,000 for his release. Burns was captured February 5 and is held in southeast Manchuria.
Sailors aboard French ships in Marseille harbor went on strike and hoisted red flags. They refused officers orders and blocked officers attempting to remove the banners under owners instruction.
President Roosevelt remained at the White House studying a batch of bills after adjournment and met with party leaders planning convention activities. Senate committees planned resumed probes into mergers and campaign expenditures, with summer hearings on political groups to follow.
Governor Eugene Talmadge urges Alfred E. Smith and other Democrats to line up with his plan to fight Roosevelt and the New Deal within the Democratic Party. He insists he will not bolt the ticket and remains a party man despite opposition to Roosevelt’s nomination and New Deal policies.
Berlin June 22 Reichs fuhrer Hitler decreed the death penalty for kidnapers retroactive to June 1. The order specifies capital punishment by the ax for anyone found guilty of kidnapping a person under 18.
In Evanston Illinois on June 22 Mrs Ethel Green nearly fainted from fumes from a heating pipe. Her unwinked parrot flew to the telephone and cried Help prompting an operator to hear the cry and a rescue squad to revive Mrs Green.
Philadelphia June 22 Democratic platform patterned on the new deal heads to a national convention amid pressure from left and right. Senator Wagner carries the White House draft. James A Farley and Alfred E Smith factions clash over liberal shifts and the two thirds nominating rule may be repealed per Roosevelt recommendations. Josephus Daniels called for ending the rule. Guffey and Byrnes weigh caucus outcomes as southern delegates lean toward repeal.
In Oshkosh Wisconsin on June 22 the Wisconsin Farmer-Labor Progressive federation voted to back William Lemke and his Union party. The federation, formed six months ago by Progressive and Socialist leaders and allied unions, tabled four resolutions urging aid for Lemke forces to win in 1940.
Schirrman's observation notes today at 11 am the temperature 75 degrees with a low of 51. Yesterday's high reached 87. One year ago today the maximum was 75 and the minimum 59.
June 22 report states Ohio's Democratic delegation backs Roosevelt and Garner for national ticket. Charles Sawyer is expected to win the caucus for the national committee post with little opposition. Horstman and Heer anticipated to withdraw, while Poulson pledges support for Sawyer. Sawyer says he will not run if the caucus blocks him.
Dr. Harvard A. Crabtree reported the Admiral W Ss Sims is definitely out of danger after his recent illness. The 77 year old World War I naval commander led U S forces in European waters and remains hospitalized in Boston on June 22.
Delegates gathered as heavyweights Reed Colby Ely and Cohalan rally behind Franklin D. Roosevelt. Smith supporters remain mute while Farley insists the party will nominate a genuine Democrat and back Roosevelt amid fears of a party split.
