Stampless Envelope May Bring 10000 at Auction
A rare 1846 postmaster provisional envelope from Portsmouth Ohio, issued before regular stamps, is up for sale by J and H Stolew of New York City. Auctioneer Bernard Rodgers says collectors estimate values up to 10000. The cover bears Portsmouth postmark and a typeset imprint, one of two known, with provenance tracing to Camden and Linn collections.
