Lawmakers Team Up On Security Bill

Final Voting Begins On Tax Cut Bill

The House ways and means committee rejected a proposed cut in the federal tax on economy cigarets, voting 13 to 12 against it. The panel tentatively set a 4.9 cent per pack rate for low-priced cigarettes but later struck that decision. The committee plans a floor vote on boosting corporation taxes by about 500 million annually and lawmakers discuss wartime excise tax cuts with offsetting increases. President Truman favors wartime tax cuts but wants offsetting rises elsewhere. Senate leaders expect action to wrap up by July.

Conferees End Rent Control Rift With Six Month Extension

Conferees from the Senate and House agreed on a compromise bill extending rent controls for six months beyond June 30.
