In Pittsburgh a traffic officer known as Trafic Officer John Zurick draws big crowds with dramatic gestures at a busy intersection. A nine year veteran, he mimics a third base coach, baseball umpire, boxing referee and ballet dancer to guide traffic. The deal includes a northern parcel and a front on Chillicothe Street, totaling five parcels. Edwards plans use of the properties as a safety and traffic project, with a committee of eye experts suggested to push uniform eye tests for drivers. Albert reported selling 350,000 Bellanca shares and other pledged collateral as brokers moved to liquidate. Pierce Governor president Carl V. Rice said Albert resigned as chairman and director. other Bellanca directors plan to resign before the July 27 annual meeting.
Police searched an abandoned estate on East Boulevard Northeast early today but found no trace of eight year old John Dale Mower who left home Wednesday night to play in Rockefeller Park. Neighborhood children said the old estate near the Russian Cultural Gardens was a play spot. remaining cellars and pits mark the site.
More than 3 000 Selby employees and their families are expected to attend the annual union management picnic jointly sponsored by the United Shoe Workers Balhy Union Local No 117 and the Selby Shoe Co at Camden Park near Huntington. The six hour event runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Ernest Dunaway, president of the Selby union local, says a larger crowd is hoped for this year compared with prior picnics. Last year the gathering at Lucasville Fairgrounds drew over 3 000 workers and families.
United Steelworkers leader David J. McDonald branded the five-year wage offer from U S Bethlehem and Republic as too little too late and too long. He said the 5 cent hourly raise with fringe benefits is inadequate and would be offset by higher insurance costs. If no agreement is reached by June 30, a strike could occur in the 650000 steelworke rs industry.
