Detroit Steel set to start new facilities next month
Detroit Steel Corp plans start of its 3 million dollar expansion with the rebuilding of the blast furnace as the lead item. Other projects include the July start of a 400000 dollar new welder for the tandem mill, October start for two soaking pits, December start for a slab preheating furnace, plus a 200000 dollar conveyor table and 150000 dollar pumps. A 300 ton ladle and a 20000 dollar dolomite machine are included to boost efficiency and yield in open hearth operations. Foundations for the welder are under way at the Detroit mill. tests proceed at Alliance Ohio on the Taylor Wingfield device for the pickling line. The welder will fuse steel sheets to allow coils of 40000 pounds and reduce end cuts from eight to two, increasing mill efficiency.

Mother Freed In Jackson Neglect Case
A nine man and three woman jury in Jackson Ohio found Mrs. Freda Brisker not guilty of neglect in the death of her 14 month old daughter Betty Kay. The baby’s body was found in an alley near the home on February 27 from exposure and suffocation. Her husband William Brisker was indicted but has not faced trial.

Big Steel To Reply Monday On Pay Offer
U S Steel Corp will present to the United Steelworkers Monday the first reply to the union demands for a substantial wage increase in the steel industry. The Big Six firms employ about 400 000 of 600 000 workers. Union head David J McDonald expects 7 8 cent an hour rise but says that is not enough. A Union Pacific Los Angeles Challenger derailment about six miles east of Fort Morgan Colo occurred when the swollen South Platte River overwhelmed the track.
