Tow Stuck Six Hours In Mishap At Dam 31

A tow on the Ohio River grounded when the lead barge ran aground near Dam 31 after passing through a lock. The six jumbo coal barges scattered below the dam as crews worked to free them while river levels dropped and dams 7 and 21 altered pools. No damage reported. The Mark Eastin, owned by River and Guil Transit Co, carried coal for Wester Pennsylvania Coal Co.

Delta Queen Steams Through Portsmouth on River Tour

The Delta Queen, last of the great packet steamers, stops at Portsmouth before continuing toward Pittsburgh. Four local passengers board at Market Street while others visit the city, then the boat departs for Gallipolis and Trenton en route to Cincinnati. Built in Scotland in 1826, the vessel later operated under Greene Line Steamers with ties to postwar commerce.

Trio Accused In Kidnaping and Rape Held In Chicago

Chicago AP report says a 16 year old and a 15 year old girl from Cincinnati accuse three men, Stanley Byrd 23 Jam Sandlin 22 and General Lee Jackson 24, of kidnapping beating raping and holding them prisoner in a Chicago suburb. They face federal charges of kidnapping and interstate transportation of women for immoral purposes with a bond set at 25000. The secretary met Byrd at a swimming pool and agreed to a ride that turned into captivity. The victims say they were held in an apartment in Wheeling until one escaped on May Day and notified authorities.
