Four People Hurt In Portsmouth Area Car Crashes

A family of three and a bicycle rider were injured in two of several traffic accidents in the Portsmouth area over the weekend. Herman Swords, 26, his wife Ruth, and son Michael, aged 2, sustained various injuries in a crash at the Luther and Lyons roads intersection near Minford. Mary Sargent, 24, another local resident, suffered facial lacerations and head bruises when her bicycle collided with a car on the West Side. Both groups were treated at local hospitals.

Truman Meets Leaders Talks Tax Measure

President Truman met with Speaker Rayburn and other Democratic leaders for about an hour and a quarter to discuss tax policy. Rayburn noted a possible shift in business taxes could offset some excise cuts, while Truman pressed revisions to corporate taxes and a higher rate from 38 to 49 percent. The group did not decide adjournment timing, with Aug. 1 unlikely for lawmakers.

The Senate refused to shelve the rent control bill by a 44 to 25 vote in a test of federal rent controls ahead of expiry June 30. Doctor Roy Elder dies on ambulance trip to hospital

Dr. Roy P. Elder, medical examiner for the Norfolk and Western Railway since 1918, collapsed in his Railroad YMCA office and died en route to Portsmouth General Hospital. He was 87, survived by his wife Bessie, a brother and two sisters, and held church and lodge memberships in Columbus and Norfolk. Forest fires in Newfoundland continued to threaten Grand Falls and Lewisporte despite rain, with volunteers and mill workers deploying hoses and water reserves as evacuation plans were considered for Lewisporte.
