Local election board will meet next week to review petitions to determine candidacy sufficiency for city offices in the upcoming primary on July 31. Petitions are on file for public inspection for five days. Four city offices have unopposed primaries. Mayor John M. Salladay and Solicitor Ernest G. Littleton face no opposition in primary or general. Auditor James D. Williams and County Treasurer Percy L. Wohler will run in a November runoff. In the Fifth ward council contest, Clarence Pyles runs against Edward De Atley. Also listed are multiple candidates for council seats in First, Second, Third, Fourth, and Sixth wards with various incumbents and challengers. Airman Escapes Death March After German Capture
Tech. Sgt. James Strafford, 28, nephew of C. C. Craigmiles of Ridgeway Drive, escaped from a German prisoner of war camp during the famed death march. He and two British companions fled after seven and a half weeks on the brutal trek from Pomernia to New Brandenburg, where many prisoners perished from starvation and torture. The escape came as Russians pressed German lines and Americans crossed the Rhine, forcing the marchers to retreat.
