The Portsmouth Welfare association launches its 16th annual drive to raise 59542 for 10 agencies including the Salvation Army Union Mission Mercy hospital Red Cross Boy Scouts Girl Scouts Y M C A and Bureau of Community Service. Volunteers urge the public to fund private aid since government relief cannot fulfill all local needs and private efforts prove more efficient with low overhead.

A common pleas jury was sworn in to hear the manslaughter case of Virginia Taylor. The panel toured Route 139 near Rubyville to inspect the accident site. Carl Ruby testified he drove about 30 mph and witnessed Taylor's car sidewipe his, leading to the collision and fatal injuries to Mrs. Cordle.

James Boyle 85 longtime private secretary to President William McKinley and former American consul at Liverpool died yesterday in Columbus. Born in England he was a newspaper man in Toronto and Cincinnati and served as McKinley’s secretary during his Ohio governorship and after his 1896 elevation to the White House. Funeral services are set for Tuesday.
Former secretary of the American mission to lepers Rev. Albert Oltmans died in Yokohama at age 85. He had lived in Japan for 53 years.
Police arrested three drivers and investigated six automobile accidents in Portsmouth over the weekend. J. W. Wilson, 29, of New Boston, charged with driving while intoxicated after a chase that ended with a gun drawn. Elbert Davis, 21, of New Boston, charged with operating a taxicab with seven passengers. Fred Haffner, 48, of Huntington Road, charged with leaving the scene of an accident.
James Darrel Owens four son of James and Etta Owens of 1721 Williams street died at 5 30 am Sunday in Portsmouth General Hospital from lead poisoning described by attending physicians as the result of chewing on painted woodwork and furniture. Surviving are the parents and brother Donald Funeral services set for 2 30 pm Tuesday at Mabert Road Baptist church with Rev Hollie Conley officiating. The body is at the residence.
