Dutch forces stormed a train and a school near Assen at dawn freeing all but two of 55 hostages held 20 days by South Moluccan gunmen. Two hostages and six hijackers were killed. 12 people wounded, including one terrorist and four marines. Prime Minister den Uyt urged force to prevent further kidnappings.
A 15 scout and four leader contingent from the Scioto Area Council trains at Camp Oye for the August 3 to 9 1977 National Jamboree at Moraine State Park Pennsylvania. In East Tennessee, James Earl Ray and five other convicts fled Brushy Mountain State Prison after scaling a wall and fence under cover of night. A 30 by 80 foot warehouse attached to Pike Furniture Co. in Waverly was destroyed by fire Friday afternoon. Firefighters from Waverly and Piketon fought the blaze for five hours, sending two people to Pike County Hospital for treatment. The Gullions own the business. Mrs Gullion and her son were treated and released. The fire started around 12 19 p.m. and investigators will determine the cause. A firewall between the warehouse and main store helped save the showroom. Water from a nearby pond aided firefighting. Fire crews remained on scene until about 5 30 p.m.
Roger D. Thomas, 26, was arrested on aggravated robbery charges after a masked man entered the Liberty Cafe and Carry-Out on Chillicothe Bay Lindamood, demanded money, and left with $95. An employee fired several shots. Thomas was held in jail on a $5,000 bond. The cafe is run by Steve Kielmar.
President Carter signals possible limited production of the B1 bomber amid opposition from lawmakers and public criticism. He plans a decision by July 1 after meetings with supporters and opponents, while stressing his early stance against the $102 million aircraft as wasteful.
The 216th Engineer Battalion of the Ohio National Guard under Maj Gerald Naylor will move from Portsmouth to Camp Grayling on June 24 for two weeks of field training. The Scioto County Ambulance Service, serving the county west of the Scioto River, has been recertified by the Ohio Department of Health. The voluntary program allows services to upgrade to national standards, with two squads, three ambulances, and dispatch from the sheriff’s courthouse by radio. Over 100 staff trained for 24 hour operation and 200 emergency runs recorded by the end of May.
