A terrorist bomb exploded under the bandstand at the Casino de la Corniche near Algiers during a seaside tea dance, killing seven people and wounding 83. Most victims were under 25, including children. authorities suspect Algerian nationalists carried out the attack amid ongoing independence pressure on the French.

Trinity assigns new pastors in Portsmouth district

The Ohio Methodist Conference at Lakeside announced annual placements. Rev. Gordon L. Groby moves from New Boston to Germantown with Rev. C. L. Hall of Wheelersburg retired to Terminals Church. Rev. Jackson P. Braddy from near Atlanta joins Trinity as associate. Rev. Franklin Cooley becomes pastor at New Boston. Thomas Wilson shifts from Trinity youth work to Vinton while studying at Ohio University. Other changes leave most pastors on current assignments.

Portsmouth arterial bids seek bids for first section

Bids open at 10 am Tuesday for the first section of the Portsmouth arterial highway program. Section A covers 11th Street 12th Street and Robinson Ave from West Street to Kendall Ave. A brick surfaced cement base will be built with widening planned on Robinson Ave and 12th St to 44 feet. Traffic changes include extending Robinson Ave toward Gallia Street near Kendall Ave and angled work at Hutching Street through the park. Completion set for December 31 1957.

Jordan Expels Two Egyptian Envoys Over Security Charges

Amman government orders two Egyptian diplomats expelled for security concerns. Foreign Minister Samir el Rifai demanded the Egyptian ambassador withdraw the military attache after he sought to recruit a Jordanian for a plot against powerful figures in Amman. The Jordanian consul general Mohammed Abdul Aziz in Jerusalem was recalled for secular reasons.

Child and Woman Die in Portsmouth Traffic Crash

A 74 year old woman Miss Bertha T iy died at 12:45 am Sunday after being struck by an eastbound car at Second Street. Driver Jacob Witmer 87 said he did not see her until too late. An injured 2 year old Darrell Salyers son of Clarice Salyers of Franklin Furnace Rt 1 remained in critical condition. Eight others suffered less serious injuries. Funeral plans for Miss Treat are announced with services Tuesday.

Man charged in death auto crash at Route 2

Donald Boland 27 of Buena Vista held on a possible manslaughter charge after a 1957 sports car crash near South Point on Route 2 early Saturday. Passenger Duard Jewett 31 of Portsmouth died. Boland admitted riding in the car, after a days-long search found him at a South Point service station.
