The Rongelap and Utirik islanders suffer radiation fallout from the March 1 hydrogen bomb test. 82 Rongelap natives describe ash like salt raining for 24 hours burning skin and causing hair loss. Robert Nimmo of Omaha told Portsmouth Managers Club that management holds the nation’s destiny. Plans to open the Scioto County Receiving Hospital before its dedication on June 27 were canceled due to missing X ray equipment. Architect inspection revealed minor defects to be repaired by subcontractors. The hospital awaits state acceptance and transfer to welfare authorities before opening. Dr. McMahon reports staff hiring difficulties amid a physician shortage in mental health. Floyd O. Major of Akron named chief of the Social Service.
Ohio would receive at least 503700 dollars if Congress approves a 22 million dollar federal airport aid request. U S Rep Thomas A Jenkins and Leo Blackburn were informed by Robert B Murray undersecretary of commerce for transportation. The Commerce Department request was sent to Congress by the White House to renew the federal aid airport program and would fund Scioto County’s new airport near Minford. Blackburn, Jenkins, and local officials say approval could move the project forward with renewed federal support.
Lewis McGraw 31 of South Webster was arraigned in municipal court on a charge of driving while intoxicated after a 12:01 a.m. arrest in the 1100 block of Gallia Street. The case was continued to June 21. The same day two others charged with similar offenses were convicted. Beverly Sue Sherman, 7, daughter of Ralph and Mrs. Sherman of Garden City, was killed when she stepped into Route 52 east of Wheelersburg.
Scioto County dates set for sale of 240 land parcels forfeited to the state from the delinquent tax list. Auditor Carl R. Smith says sales run June 29 to July 1 in the Probate Courtroom starting 9 30 a m with possible extension to July 2 and notices published June 18 and 25.
Former Vice President Alben W. Barkley, 76, of Paducah, announces his candidacy for the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination. His declaration was received by mail at the secretary of state’s office in Frankfort.
In California a strong Democratic surge yields nominations on the Democratic ticket across national and state offices. James Roosevelt wins a congressional nomination from Los Angeles as Ted Owings faces him in November. Incumbent Representative Robert Condon also secures renomination against John Baldwin Jr. Gov Goodwin Knight wins the Republican nomination for governor while Democratic nominee Graves trails.

Sen. Symington announced he wished to testify under oath at the McCarthy Army hearings. He said McCarthy should appear before an appropriate Senate committee and testify about questions involving McCarthy's financial affairs. Symington, a Missouri Democrat, highlighted this condition.

A man died and two others were hospitalized from injuries in three N and W incidents Tuesday afternoon. Michael W. Sawyer, 69, of 1534 Poplar Street, a former N and W conductor, was struck by a westbound passenger train at 4 16 p m behind 2934 Walnut Street. William Sowards Gammon, about 55, of Sciotoville, is listed in fair condition after a likely hit by an eastbound train at Star Yards around 12 10 p m. Robert L Leadingham, 62, of 850 Russ Street Sciotoville, lost his left foot and sustained severe ankle injuries in the N and W car shop accident. Dr Richard L Woodyard, Scio to County coroner, is handling the case.
