A French vessel was struck by a bomb in a Mediterranean raid as serial attacks continue near Canton amid protests by Western powers. The incident adds to a rising death toll and geopolitical tensions involving fascist forces and Allied responses.
Insurgent air raids on shipping off Denia Spain kill five aboard the French freighter Brisbane and injure ten more while the British freighter Isadora suffers a harbor bombing with no casualties. Britain proposes an international aerial patrol in the Mediterranean to curb piracy, possibly with Italian involvement. Japanese and Spanish forces press campaigns in China and Spain amid renewed aerial warfare and strategic shifts.

Brookville Indiana June 9 Coroner Fred C Swing reports farmer Joe Bulach 55 shot and killed his wife Florence 43 seriously wounded daughter Dorothy 9 then took his own life A son Joe Bulach Jr 14 escaped after being awakened The neighbors said Bulach appeared worried over financial difficulties and had visited them the previous night Dorothy was shot through the head and not expected to live
The Ohio Senate concurred 24 to 0 with house amendments on a stop gap relief bill authorizing 1.5 million dollars in advances on 1938 sales tax revenues to distressed counties. The measure allows local governments to issue bonds repaid from 1939 sales tax revenues and moves to the governor for formal signing.
James A. Richardson of Scioto county announces candidacy for the Democratic nomination to represent the Sixth Ohio district. He backs Roosevelt measures and farm-industry legislation, cites CIO support, and is endorsed by the Scioto county Labor Nonpartisan League and Portsmouth Industrial Council. The district covers Scioto Pike Adams Highland Brown and Clermont counties.
The White House announced President Roosevelt plans a western trip beginning July 7 with a stop in Covington Kentucky on July 8. No details were released. He will also speak by train in Kentucky and later attend a July 8 event in Marietta Ohio marking the Northwest Territory’s 150th anniversary.
About 100 WPA workers at the sedimentation basin in Ashland waited for District Employment Supervisor G. H. Rice of Paintsville. Rice was en route to investigate a strike the workers say is a protest against foreman Albert R. Canterbury, who has led the job about a week.

June 9 194? southern senators warned they would filibuster the wage hour bill unless pay differentials are removed or softened. The group of 17 endorsed a 40 cent minimum after seven years, with Pepper proposing a 25 cent start and industry boards to raise to 40 cents as feasible. Ellender accused AFL leaders of meddling with the conference, derailing a southern compromise.
In Ray Arizona deputy Sheriff Jack Hickox was shot on Main Street after recognizing a prison escapee. James Bailey was captured an hour later by hastily deputized citizens. Bailey confessed to the killing and led searchers to two other fugitives Tony Meyes and Columbus Reece, the last of five convicts who escaped in a prison truck after stabbing Guard Captain Joe Lazear.
The body of kidnapped James Bailey Cash Jr. was found near Princeton Florida as FBI recovered the $10,000 ransom. Suspect Franklin Pierce McCall, a 21 year old truck driver, led authorities to the scene and confessed writing the ransom notes and collecting the money. The case may go to a state grand jury with potential murder or kidnapping charges.
The Senate considers an omnibus flood control bill costing about 375 million dollars with a 6 to 7 million dollar Ports mouth and New Boston flood wall and levee project. Senator Norris objects to broad Army Engineers powers over flood control and allied purposes. The bill, passed by the House, would authorize construction as funds become available.
Judge Arthur H. Day of the Ohio Supreme Court filed for the Republican U S Senate nomination saying the country faces danger from one man rule. He attacked Senator Robert J Bulkley for backing the court packing bill and other legislation, claiming he has become a Roosevelt yes-man.
Preston Caffelt, 60, was found shot to death in his burning farm home near Urbana Ohio. Sheriff Jay Mc Keever and Coroner Richard Brand led an immediate investigation. Neighbors G. B. Pickering and Charles Brown reported finding the victim with a shotgun across his knee and a fire in every room.
Washington June 9 administration efforts to purge congress of unfriendly Democrats may unite anti Roosevelt forces in the 1939 session. Several senate court bill foes will be up for renomination, with leaders pledging aid to opponents and signaling a stronger anti administration nucleus in the new Congress.
Ernest Dennison a 32 year old escapee from the London prison farm who fled from Patrolmen Harry Gardner and D A Connell was wounded early today after a 30 minute chase. The bullet impact halted his flight and he was captured.
