London reports a British radio instruction to evacuate occupied France from Belgium to the Spanish border. The No. 2 notice warns civilians to depart now as coastal warfare looms, with Germans likely to hinder exits and no time or place of operations specified.
Strong Republican support for a 50 a month minimum pay scale in the armed forces boosts Sen Follette of Wisconsin in contesting a joint senate house conference committee’s compromise on 46. Sen Capper says the 50 was approved by the house and may influence voting. Senator Austin is to submit the conference report despite expected GOP opposition.
President Roosevelt Tuesday filed a memorandum with Speaker Rayburn requesting a war department appropriation of 39 417 827 337 dollars for the fiscal year ending June 30 1943. If approved this would raise the total war spending approved by congress for three years to over 200 billion dollars.
Mr La Follette backs recommit to conference after a $46 agreement and vows to push for a $50 salary. He warns his flag is nailed to the mast and says a Senate majority would have to tear it down. Meanwhile the House plans to take up a bill granting aid to families of servicemen in the four lowest pay grades with monthly pay of $78 or less.

Major George Strong of the army air corps procurement area said the workforce is vital to the war effort and warned that workers could be deferred or called to serve, framing the choice as work or fight. About 250 employees are in the strike, started a week ago.
The Supreme Court upheld overtime pay for white collar workers even with fixed weekly salaries. Two decisions split 8 to 1 and 5 to 4, applying wage hour rules to Overnight Motor Transportation Co and A H Belo Corp. Justice Reed authored the first ruling and noted a guaranteed weekly sum. Justice Byrnes led the Belo decision.
Scioto County War Chest campaign nearing its goal of 105 206 with 9 428 83 still needed as of today. The final report meeting is set for 6 30 p m Tuesday at Trinity Methodist church and Harry M Denton urges continued outreach to donors. A subsequent business meeting will elect new board members for the War Chest and Portsmouth Welfare association.
Draft boards 1 and 2 sent 50 men to the army induction station at Huntington today. They reported at the Greyhound Lines station and boarded two buses. This may be the last group sent before the final exam rule takes effect, with final examinations for July calls after June 15.
Private First Class Orville C. Harris 31 of New Boston is listed missing after Corregidor’s fall. The war department notified his parents of the absence and officials seek a prisoner list via the Red Cross. Harris was a noted Portsmouth pianist in a pickup band praised by General Wainwright. He was born July 1, 1911, and survived by five brothers and three sisters.
President Roosevelt told a House committee he may go on radio to address a dispute over gas policy. Representative Kieberg of Texas reported the issue arising from a proposed government gas program and related controversy.
Treasury data show June to May war savings bonds total 634.356 million dollars nationwide, 5.7 percent above quota. Hawaii led with 603.3 percent of its 992 thousand dollar target, buying 5.985 million. Alaska 248.5 percent with 492 thousand. Utah 171.3 percent. Ohio 113 percent with 35.899 million.
Cairo June 8 The 14 day Libyan desert fight saw British and Free French forces repulse Axis attacks at Knightsbridge and Birana. Rommel’s columns were slowed by reinforced armor and minefield gaps while the Free French at Bir Hacheim repelled a tank assault. The British aim to seal a semi circle east of the Ain el Gazala Bir Hacheim gap to sever Rommel from the rear.
Reuters dispatch from London datelined At the French frontier reports German ambassador Otto Abetz acknowledged in Paris that 11,009 to 12,000 people were killed in the RAF bombardment of Cologne and 180,000 were ordered evacuated.
The air ministry said British warplanes damaged a German ship off the Frisian Islands and struck targets in northern France and Holland last night. Poor weather prevented a mass follow up raid on Emden after a Saturday night assault. A large formation of fighters then attacked northern France in daylight.
Lt. Gen. H H Arnold, commander of the United States Army Air Forces, told the 100th annual Towa Wesleyan College commencement that for every plane shot down the Japs have lost four. He warned of a coming day of wrath and touted heavy US air power and production targets.
Japanese submarines slipped in under darkness and shelled Sydney and Newcastle causing limited damage and one casualty. A blackout was ordered across coastal New South Wales, extending inland in some areas. The attack followed an earlier failed Sydney harbor raid.

Reports from Pearl Harbor on June 8 describe a Japanese withdrawal from Midway after a three day battle. Admiral Nimitz cites losses of at least three Japanese ships sunk and extensive damage to air forces, while American losses were limited to one destroyer sunk and one carrier hit. General MacArthur congratulates the victory from Australia as Hawaii rejoices at the Pacific success.

He cautioned the situation is still unclear but stressed the fight remains active and that Midway battle may determine the war’s course depending on its outcome. He emphasized Hawaii must be held and Pearl Harbor remains a vital Pacific base.
