Youth pilot claims Mars mission proof after plane sinks

Cheston L. Eshleman, 22, Carlisle, Pa, held in Pennsauken jail on larceny charges after his rented monoplane sank 175 miles off the Massachusetts coast while he sought to reach Mars. He sent a letter to Philadelphia Newspapers with his flight plan, addressed to Mars and dated October 1938. He was rescued by a fishing vessel and is expected to be extradited back to Carlisle.

Police to issue full report on fatal shooting of 14 year old girl

MAUCH CHUNK Pa June 8 State police chief promised a complete report on the fatal shooting of 14 year old Joan Stevens by Corporal Benjamin Franklin 33 who said he fired six shots when she threatened him with a gun during an inquiry into a robbery plot. The girl daughter of a coal miner was shot as she rode in an automobile with Franklin and Private Edward J Jay who were questioning her about a suspected robbery.

Two Drivers Fined and One Arrest in Municipal Court

Two automobile drivers were fined and two were dismissed Wednesday when arraigned in municipal court. Cloud Taylor of 1234 Front Street was fined 50 dollars plus costs, his license suspended six months and he was sent to Scioto county jail for nonpayment. He faced a charge of leaving the scene of an accident. Willis E. Prather of Otway Route 1 was fined 10 dollars and costs for operating a motor vehicle with insufficient rights. He was arrested in New Boston after his car reportedly collided with a car owned by Joseph Distel at 2124 Gallia Street.
