Washington reports the 42nd annual National Spelling Bee ended with Bob Ruggles, Times District champion, eliminated in the fifth round on the obscure word cutlery. He struggled to match the pronouncer’s diction but gave a valiant effort despite the unfamiliar term.
Susan Yoachum of Dallas wins the national spelling bee in Washington after a tense final. She miss or Margaret Matthews of Huntsville missteps, then Susan masters the target word to prevail. The event featured many spellers from Ohio and Kentucky, with early rounds clearing 50 contestants and 464 words in the first day.
Bob, the 22nd contestant to exit, finished 52nd after misspelling cutlary tripping on the 281st word.
Senate critics from both parties challenge President Nixon after his ABM and Vietnam policy speech calling opponents isolationists. Senator Fulbright denounces the implication while Senator Pearson defends opposing excessive military spending as not isolationist. Nelson adds the critique that anti ABM rhetoric miscasts opponents as unilateral disarmers.
Ohio Senate passes a statewide water fluoridation bill 23 to 10 led by Sen. Michael Maloney and Sen. Robin Turner. The measure would require fluoridation for all supplies serving 20,000+ by 1971 and 5,000–20,000 by 1972, affecting about 91 percent of residents while home rule opponents cry foul.
On the second anniversary of the six day war Arabs attacked Israeli areas with grenades and bazookas as Israeli troops tightened security. Four Israeli soldiers and four Arab civilians were wounded. A solo grenade at El Ma a zi refugee camp wounded three Israelis. Beisan Valley fighting and a barenade near Herod's Gate caused further injuries. Police dispersed a parade of Arab schoolgirls at a cemetery and arrested several. Economic protests and a general strike were reported in Nablus as tensions stay high.

Lisbon announces that under Portuguese pressure the Biafrans will release 18 foreign oilmen sentenced to death. The group including 14 Italians, three West Germans, and one Lebanese faces release after procedural issues are resolved.
An unarmed U S reconnaissance plane was shot down over North Vietnam. Two crewmen bailed out and were rescued near Dong Hoi by a helicopter. Two escort fighter bombers attacked antiaircraft sites with unknown results. Thirteen Americans died aboard other downed aircraft in South Vietnam.
A U S attorney says the Justice Department will continue the probe after nine individuals connected to a Columbus numbers operation were named in grand jury indictments. The officers named face charges of conspiracy to use interstate facilities to aid racketeering and to defraud the United States. The indictments allege payoffs from organized gamblers and include a ninth man described as a numbers operator. Arraignments set for June 13 in U S District Court.
Father Patrick McCarthy assistant pastor at St. Mary's Catholic Church was suspended after marrying Susan Rolfe a nun who taught at St Mary's Grade School in Greenup Kentucky on May 24. McCarthy 28 and his bride 29 left the area following the ceremony. Bishop Clarence Elwell head of the Columbus diocese ordered the suspension.
A Mexicana de Aviacion Boeing 727 crashed on a mile high Sierra Madre peak near Monterrey. Debris litters the mountainside as 79 people including Rafael Osuna and Carlos Madrazo are feared dead. Rescue work faces bad weather and rugged terrain with military and international help planned.
The Shawnee Open Archery Tournament comes to Municipal Stadium this weekend with 150 plus professional archers from 15 states competing for 5000 in cash and merchandise. Competition runs Saturday starting 1 PM and Sunday at 8 30 AM.
