Luzon Island rocked for two and a half minutes as a moderate earthquake sent people fleeing across Manila and surrounding areas. Large cracks appeared in tall buildings while fires sparked by electrical faults were contained. No casualties were reported though extensive property damage was noted across the island.
The Junior Chamber of Commerce contest ends in a tie awarding $25 prizes to two homes and Harding School. First place shared by Mrs. Harold Rentinger and O M Vetter. Harding School, Seioteville, displayed a glass-stained Christmas in foreign lands scene by Miss Thelma Johnston and pupils with eight-foot plywood figures near the entrance.
Washington reports economists from government and industry anticipate a prosperous 1950. Secretary of Commerce Sawyer conveys to President Truman that prospects are good, with cautious optimism. Private experts foresee a strong first half of 1950, amid announced price cuts on items like milk soap and television sets.
Three mysterious Russian ships Trepang Permautr and Chiaka have appeared near Caribbean waters on the eve of large peacetime maneuvers. Officials describe them as fishing ships without gear but with powerful radios. The ships, en route from the Baltic via St Thomas and the Panama Canal, bring the count of similar vessels seen in the area to 15 over two and a half years. Military observers speculate on possible aims beyond fishing, noting past patterns with pre maneuver appearances. The ships are expected to reach the Canal Zone around the end of the year or early next week and are subject to US port regulations at St Thomas.
A second Arctic storm battered the Pacific Northwest bringing more snow to British Columbia and added flood threats to Washington state. At least two people died in the first storm that struck Tuesday.
Los Angeles Times aviation editor Marvin Miles reports the X-1 rocket plane may have reached 1,989 mph over Edwards Air Force Base at Mojave Dry Lake, claiming Mach 3. He cites unnamed informants and suggests Capt. Charles Yeager or Maj. Pete Everest could be at the controls. The craft drops from a bomber, climbs to 80,000 feet, then accelerates for about four minutes with 6,000 pounds of thrust.
Sen Morse argues that the three day coal week and potential rail service cuts cannot be halted by the President under national emergency powers. He warns a coal dispute could threaten national health and safety, while noting tensions with Taft Hartley actions and calls to restore full production.
Midwest lawmakers flood Agriculture Department with protest mail over egg prices as low as 2 cents a dozen and hog prices near 50 cents a pound. Senators Butler and Gillette, Representatives Andersen and others demand action. The egg support program aims for 37 cents per dozen next year, while dried eggs stockpile nears 90 million dollars.
Pittsburgh December 29 AP The national bituminous coal wage conference plans to urge the National Labor Relations Board to deem John L. Lewis three day work week an unfair labor practice. George H. Love president of Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co said the conference operators negotiating committee is preparing NLRB charges. Lewis urged separate operator agreements for a 290 cent daily pay raise and a licent a ton increase to fund welfare. Love called Lewis attempts to coerce operators with a blank check contracts a complete failure as many operators have not moved to sign.
Albany December 29 AP Thomas E Dewey denied plans for another presidential bid while sparking talk he may seek a third term as governor. He appointed Charles D Breitel to the state Supreme Court, fueling speculation he’ll retire from public life at the end of his term on December 31 1950.
President Truman returns to work shaping a two new faces lineup for a pivotal year as Congress opens. Key changes include Leon Keyserling replacing Dr. Edwin G. Nourse and J. Howard McGrath taking over Clark’s old role as the top economic adviser post. The administration presses a left of center program amid mixed opposition while preparing an economic message for January.
The 1950 campaign opens with two more candidates for district offices and another for county posts. James G. Polk filed for Democratic renomination for U S representative in Scioto County. Don M. Duncan filed Republican petitions for state senate in the 7th district. Lowell Strickland sought Democratic nomination for county commissioner. Filing deadline is Feb. 1 for May primaries. The eight county senate race opens after the death of Tom W. Jones.
Budapest Dec 29. The Communist government ordered expulsion or seizing of all industrial firms with more than 10 employees, affecting nearly all American and foreign companies operating in Hungary. The move marks a sweeping regimentation of foreign and local industry.
Robert Taylor of KT Enterprises faces slot machine charges at L and Mi Truck Stop Wheelersburg as state evidence ends and judge Cranston puts case under advisement until January 31. The hearing spanned eight other defendants and two more charges, with a potential grand jury review urged by the judge. Daniel Dawson testified prior to noon.
In a 4 to 2 vote the 1948 49 Portsmouth City Council approved a resolution backing a $100 000 loan request from the Public Housing Administration for surveys and planning toward more than 300 low rent units. The measure awaits the incoming council for final effect and includes a consent to city cooperation with PMHA. Realtors warned of possible blank check risk and urged delay until tax impact is clarified by the Ohio Supreme Court.
World famous author Harvey Allen died of a heart attack in his Florida winter home. He was 60 and was found on a bathroom floor as he prepared to shave. He was working on City in the Dawn, the fourth book in a pre-Revolutionary United States series. He wrote Wampum and Old Gold Israel Action at Aquila The Forest and the Fort and edited Rivers of America.
