In Columbus the Ohio Senate Democrats select Charles J. Carney of Youngstown to succeed Frank W. King as Senate minority leader. The nomination was unanimous as King plans to exit early next year to focus on his union role. Carney did not state whether he would resign any current post.
President elect Nixon endorses the official 35 dollar per ounce gold price as European bullion and currency markets steady. Treasury pick David Kennedy declines to pledge defending the price, sparking speculation of a rise, while Nixon aides say no policy change is planned.
In Carlinville Illinois a 38 year old father of ten Sherman Kline opened fire at a welfare agency Christmas party wounding four children and killing four adults including his wife Lorraine two social workers Frank Wildgrube and Bonnie Albracht and receptionist Ann Keppler. He fled then died by a self inflicted wound hours later in a Springfield hospital.
Cambodia announced the release of 12 American soldiers held for a year while the Viet Cong offered to free three U.S. troops. Prince Sihanouk spoke in Phnom Penh about freeing 11 Americans and a South Vietnamese captured last July. A Viet Cong spokesman named three men offered for release. The Australian Embassy said the freed prisoners would fly to Bangkok Friday. Johnson sent a cordial message, promising continued friendship, but Sihanouk criticized Washington for not meeting conditions, including a personal letter on cross border violations.
NASA reported a faulty valve in the liquid hydrogen pumping system delayed fueling for Apollo 8 by about four hours. Officials said countdowns remain ahead of schedule overall with plans to regain time during a five hour hold before the terminal count begins at 8:51 p.m.
Paris dispatch says the United States warned North Vietnam that a Viet Cong attack on Sai gon could halt peace talks and revive bombing of the North. The NLF declared seriousness and goodwill at a first news conference and condemned talks of a four sided parley. Cyrus Vance met Col. Ha Van Lao as U S and Saigon discuss conference shapes.
A 49 year old Oak Hill woman, Mrs Sereene Comer, died in a house fire on Fast Main Street. The single story cottage was destroyed leaving only walls and partial roof. Fire officials and the State Fire Marshal investigated the blaze which began about 11 p.m. and left Mrs Comer’s body located near a sofa.
FBI reported a ransom payoff for kidnapped coed Barbara Jane Markle was broken up when a policeman chased a suspicious car near Miami bayside. A suitcase with $500,000 was found in the abandoned car along with a skin diving suit. Two fugitives fled. one carried a carbine. Officials noted the money was transferred from a boat to a vehicle. The source said Barbara Jane Markle was alive and unharmed.
