Legislation stalled over a two stage 11 percent Social Security boost and a sweeping energy bill granting presidential power to ration fuel. Conferees must resolve defense funds emergency measures and District of Columbia home rule amid a bid to curb busing for children and cut highway speeds.
The IRS lifts its ban on the word spouse and trims terminology for 1973 federal income tax forms. Changes include dropping a separate dividends and interest schedule, allowing 1040A users above $200 to file, and offering a toll free help system nationwide.
Federal Energy Office head William E. Simon told CBS and ABC that the energy crisis will persist even if Arab oil shipments resume. He warned demand will outpace supply through 1999 and urged public belt tightening while accusing officials and oil interests of mismanagement. Senator Henry M. Jackson echoed the view that imports alone cannot solve the shortage.
Palestinian commandos used an incendiary bomb to damage a Pan American Boeing 707 at Rome Fiumicino. A Luft Hansa Boeing 737 was hijacked with hostages, one customs officer and an American reported in critical condition. Police evacuated the airport as the guerrillas fled.
Washington Pa AP W A Tony Boyle, former United Mine Workers president, was indicted on three counts of murder in the 1969 killings of Joseph Yablonski his wife and daughter. Boyle, 70, is under protection in a Washington DC hospital recovering from a suicide attempt on Sept 24.
Boston marked 200 years since the Tea Party with four demonstrations. A re enactment tossed ten empty chests, while the People’s Bicentennial Commission held an Impeach Nixon banner with a Nixon mask. DAV members in Indian dress tarred and feathered a Nixon dummy, and Boston Indians protested fakes. Police counted about 20 000 spectators as a town meeting and waterfront march followed. Katherine Kane of Boston 200 praised citizen diversity and response.
Big rig drivers end a park in at truck stops and restart highway travel nationwide. Leaders say protests may continue if fuel costs and speed limits aren not resolved, with plans to form a national independent truckers group.
Trucker crowds remain parked at several Ohio stops including Coal Grove and Franklin as a statewide slowdown persists. Drivers press for higher speed limits and cheaper diesel while patrols report light traffic and no violence amid renewed talks. A meeting is planned for Tuesday with officials and industry leaders to address demands.
