A Honolulu source says President Truman's demagoguery remark hurt relations with President-elect Eisenhower. The two men, once cordial, are described as likely to maintain a formal, cool rapport in the near future as Eisenhower heads to New York then to Korea.
South Korean troops storm Little Nori Hill driving back Communist forces after fierce combat. Reds attacked Big Nori nearby as tanks and air support pounded the peaks 40 miles north of Seoul. U N forces reported heavy artillery, air strikes, and losses on both sides with Sabre jets claiming several MIGs shot down.
County Commissioner Robert R. Leedom was elected Friday as president of the County Commissioners Association of Ohio at the Columbus convention to serve in 1953. The group notes Scioto County has previously led state associations. Engineers’ group president O. Carson Barklow also serves this year. Leedom and Lawrence Fitch with clerk Ronald Greene and deputy Ruth Gibson returned from Columbus Friday afternoon.
The Declaration of Independence, the U S Constitution, and the Bill of Rights travel from the Library of Congress to a new National Archives vault in an armored transfer. A 20-ton safe with five-ton doors will protect the papers, now kept in helium cases, amid a ceremony led by President Truman.
Frank H. Mosier aged 82 was struck and killed by a car as he alighted from a bus Friday in Chesapeake Ohio He had been returning from a Christmas shopping trip to Huntington An accident investigation was not announced in the brief report.
President Truman moved to revive the Wage Stabilization Board by naming new industry members after appointing Joseph H. Freehill as administrator of the Office of Price Stabilization. Freehill will cut OPS payroll by about 1,525 and dismiss 400 in Washington and 1,000 in field offices after Christmas amid wage-price control tensions.
An earthquake struck Oakland late last night described as shocking by residents. No damage was reported though the incident sparked more than 100 calls to newspapers and police stations, mainly from the east side of Oakland.
County officials project the 1953 tax rate for Portsmouth real estate to be about 22.80 or 22.90 mills, down from 25.80 in 1952 as the 3 mill levy expires. A 0.15 mill tuberculosis levy will add about $20,000 for one year. Hearings begin Monday on 1953 rates with city officials first at the table.
Clyde L. Jenkins appointed superintendent of materials and service, and Henry Watts named purchasing agent for the Goodyear Atomic Corp division. They report to I. S. Gharky, as Albert J. Gracia announces in the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co subsidiary. Jenkins joined Goodyear in 1928 after Akron University study and has served in purchasing and warehousing roles. Watts takes the purchasing role as the Portsmouth Area plant expands.

Plans resume the Portmouth Junior Chamber of Commerce Christmas home lighting contest after a wartime suspension. Dr Richard Brunner leads the Jaycee committee with a rotating plaque for yearly winners and simple rules for entries within Portsmouth Sciotoville and New Boston city limits.
Cornelius Francis Goldcamp 34, Ironton businessman and councilman of Trenton, was killed when his car left Route 23 near the Pickaway Ross line, struck a bridge abutment, overturned and sank. Five injured in related Portsmouth area accidents. He leaves wife Theresa and four children.
Temporary improvements on Route 23 to handle increased traffic are advancing as Wakefield gains a relocated section. A new concrete bridge over Salt Creek will replace the old span while a curve near Wakefield is removed and an underpass widened.
The Navy will lay the keel of its second super size carrier at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on Tuesday with Secretary Dan Kimball presiding. The 60 000 ton Saratoga will be a sister ship to the Forrestal whose construction began last July at Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. in Virginia.
San Francisco police arrest Travis Hail in Richmond on the Chester California massacre case. Gard Young, 43, and his children Jean 7 Judy 6 Michael 4 Sondra 3 survived. Hall known as Al Foley faces a holding charge after tip linked him to the slayings.
Registrations open Monday for a blood donation drive by the Red Cross bloodmobile. Volunteers will sign up donors at the Scioto County Red Cross Chapter office for a pint each next Thursday and Friday. The Huntington bloodmobile will visit All Saint Episcopal Church Guild Hall targeting 125 pints daily. Church members join this special donor drive led by Mrs. C. L. Pitcher.
A former U S Army intelligence agent in Europe traveling as a tourist was seized in Berlin with thousands of top secret files. Martin W. Rothkrug, 45, of Westport Connecticut, is held in the Berlin Army stockade since August 2 as the Army and State Department investigate. His brother Mark Rothkrug of Westport has been told a trial is impending.
