The Associated Press reports Hitler and Mussolini declared war on the United States after the Axis allied with Japan. Hitler praised German unity and vowed to take necessary measures, while Mussolini promised victory and attacked President Roosevelt for provoking the conflict.
The sinking of the 29 000 ton Japanese battleship Haruna off Luzon was announced by Secretary of War Stimson. American forces have confined Japanese land forces to Aparri area as U S and Philippine troops repel raids and bomber attacks near Lingayen and Lingayen Gulf.
Scioto county veterans from World War I era gathered at the American Legion hall on Second Street for a mass rally in support of national defense. Louis T. Kricker of James Dickey Post led the registration as hundreds signed up to volunteer for any emergency duty.
Miss Helen Glockner chairing the recruiting and enrollment committee calls for volunteer typists and typewriter owners to assist or loan machines. Call room 423 National Bank building or phone 3009. Clyde Sennett and E M Ferris added to the committee.

The Matson liner Lurtine reached San Francisco yesterday, less than 1,000 miles from Honolulu when Oahu was attacked. The ship carried 300 passengers including navy wives and children, and the voyage involved a nerve wracking zigzag at full speed.
At the first wartime meeting the city council unanimously created a municipal defense council with the mayor as chairman and up to 11 appointees. Kenneth B. Lehman named executive and coordinator, Carl J. Phipps as chairman. The body coordinates defense activities, liaises with the national civilian defense office led by Mayor LaGuardia, and can hire staff but city finances require approval.
Washington December 11 The United States weighs broadening selective service to register all able bodied men and women 18 to 65 for military and civilian defense Brigadier General Louis B Hershey says the No 1 project. He estimates 20 million could serve in some role including factory work civilian defense or noncombatant service. Immediate availability could total about 1 million by lowering standards and using the 21 to 28 group first. Legislation would be needed only to change age limits.
More than 2,300 of about 3,000 crewmen from the sunken Prince of Wales and Repulse were saved in the China Sea. Survivors, including many aboard a destroyer, landed at Singapore as British authorities report the battleships were hit by bombers. The loss is linked to Japanese aircraft with some claims of submarine torpedoes aiding the strike. Captain Tennant survived. Admiral Phillips fate unknown.
