In Madison township a flag pole dispute between Walter Atkins and half brother T Gilea dominated Common Pleas court proceedings. Atkins sues for pole possession. jury verdict returns $1.50 for plaintiff. Two divorces granted: Lilly B Jackson vs Wm Jackson and Alfonso Tonneman vs Gertrude Tonneman. Other probate and real estate actions noted, plus road surveys, taxes, and marriage licenses.
Levi B Gibson, aged seventy and longtime landlord of the Gibson Home in Jackson, died Monday of heart disease while fetching kindling from a woodshed. He was well known in Portsmouth and had long operated the hotel business in Jackson, with holiday gift shoppers urged to consider Sterling Silver novelties, opera glasses, and aluminum novelties.
Special report by the State Board of Agriculture for November notes improved wheat germination after break in early month conditions, but wheat remains 37 points below fair average. Corn shows fair regional yields but uneven quality and late planting caused replanting. Overall corn production near 1896 but below 1895. fodder stored in silo 7 percent. average dates Sept 19 and Oct 19 for fodder and cribbing.
The obituary reports Mrs Sophia Zorn Kalb who died in Cincinnati and was brought to her city. funeral set for Thursday at 1 30 PM. Maiden name Sophia Zorn. born Wheeleraborg September 30 1853. married Henry Kalb in 1878. Also notes Lillian Schuler eight months old died of brain fever. funeral Wednesday at 2 PM. James Roberts's three weeks old son died of brain trouble. burial Friday at 10 AM.
Rumor in railroad circles suggests Superintendent J Robinson will sever ties with the Norfolk and Western soon and align with another major line. He is highly regarded and reportedly seeks a headquarters in Columbus with a new road.
The Greenup Gazette reports a gold excitement near Bennett's Mill with claims a mine will open under Isaac Clark and Geo Clark of Portsmouth. A shaft to 180 feet is planned, with experts asserting a $100 gold and $15 silver per ton substance. Portsmouth capitalists back the venture. B F Bennett of Greenup holds land interest. A respected Ironton woman Mrs B A Murphy died at her North Fifth Street home at 6 am Monday. In her 59th year, she had been frail for six years but recently improving before sudden heart failure ended her life. Surviving family includes three sons Mr Charen, Mr George, and Mr R Seecrane, and daughter Mrs Rose Hunt of Maysville, Kentucky. Born in Clare Ireland February 15 1839, she married Patrick Murphy October 23 1959 and was a longtime esteemed local business figure.
Shonkwiler, an employee at Burgess Steel and Iron Works, was hit by a crane mishap about 11 o clock Thursday morning. He lay unconscious for nearly twenty minutes and was rushed home for medical care where he rests today.
